Our first step is to make the canvas wet. We do this by applying a thin even coat of one of the special base coats.
The one used most is called Liquid white, although there are other base coats sometimes used: Liquid black and liquid clear. Each is used depending on the painting we would do.
Liquid white can be used to thin other colors right on the canvas rather than working ourselves to death on the palette.
The idea that a thin paint will stick to a thick paint is the basis for this entire technique. This principal is one of the Golden Rules and should be remembered at all times.
